Homebrew Contest

Celebrate the spirit of the Home Brewer!

You brew up your best IPAs, Lagers, and Ales and get treated like the VIP you are! Our panel of local expert judges will taste your concoctions and select a winner from each category, to be announced at the 2024 Rails & Ales Brewfest on August 17. Our event VIPs, including you, will also get to taste and vote on their favorite! (Homebrew samples while supplies last.)

Details

Each brew you enter must be in a separate category and you must provide six bottles of each brew. Two bottles will be used for the judging, and the other four will go to the VIP tents for the People’s Choice.

Judging Categories:

  1. IPA
  2. Ale
  3. Lager
  4. Dark (Stout, Porter)
  5. Specialty (Cider, Fruit)

Categories may change or be added based on entries.

 

Judging/Prizes

  • A panel of local judges will taste your brews at a closed judication on August 16 (brews MUST be delivered to ACT on August 15. See more below).
  • Winners will be be announced at Rails & Ales Brewfest August 17 (approximately 5 PM)
    • Judges Choice:
      • “Best of” for each category will be awarded a medal
      • “Best Overall Brew” will win $100 cash prize
    • People’s Choice:
      • Brews will be tasted and voted on by our VIP attendees. The “Peoples Choice” winner will also receive $100

Cost

One entry fee per brewer covers your admission into the contest and VIP entrance to the Brewfest on August 17.

  • $45 per brewer – EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION before August 1st
  • $60 per brewer from August 1st – August 13th

 

Instructions

Must be 21 or older to enter.

  • Register online by selecting “Home Brew Contest Entry” ticket(s) on our Eventbrite Event.
  • Download the Contest Entry Form and fill in with your brew information. Return by mail, email, or with your brews on August 15.
    • To register by check, return the entry form with your payment. For early bird registration, it must be postmarked by Aug 1.
  • You (or your team) may submit as many brews as you’d like, limited to one beer per category.
  • Provide six bottles of each brew you’re entering. Labels with ONLY the brew name must be attached to each bottle. No other identifying information or logos allowed.
  • Brews must be delivered to Altoona Community Theatre at 1213 12th Street on August 15th between 12 pm and 7 pm. To arrange a different drop-off time (same day) please call the office at 814-943-4357.
    No late deliveries will be accepted. Entry fees will not be refunded in the event of late submission and your ticket will be converted to General Admission.

Home Brewers are VIPs!

Each home brewer will receive a VIP entry ticket, so that you can taste the competition!

VIPs get to enter the Brewfest at 2 pm to sample the beers not available to the general public and vote for the People’s Choice! VIPs also get a sampling of delicious food, a private music performance, and exclusive Rails and Ales swag!
